Violent Relaxation Around a Massive Black Hole
نویسنده
چکیده
I present galaxy models resulting from violent relaxation in the presence of a pre-existing black hole. The models are computed by maximizing the entropy of the stellar dynamical system. I show that their properties are very similar to those of adiabatic growth models for a suitable choice of parameters. This suggests that observations of nuclear light profiles and kinematics alone may not be sufficient to discriminate between scenarios where a black hole grows adiabatically in the core of a galaxy, and scenarios where the black hole formation preceeds galaxy formation. subject headings: galaxies: elliptical and lenticular, cD — galaxies: nuclei — galaxies: formation

The Galactic Center as a laboratory for extreme mass ratio gravitational wave source dynamics
The massive Galactic black hole and the stars around it are a unique laboratory for studying how relaxation processes lead to close interactions of stars and compact remnants with the central massive black hole, in particular those leading to the emission of gravitational waves. I review new results on the processes of strong mass segregation and loss-cone refilling by massive perturbers and re...
متن کاملEvolution of Massive Black Hole Binaries
We present the results of large-scale N -body simulations of the stellar-dynamical evolution of massive black hole binaries at the center of spherical galaxies. We focus on the dependence of the hardening rate on the relaxation timescale of the parent galaxy. A simple theoretical argument predicts that a binary black hole creates a “loss cone” around it. Once the stars in the loss cone are depl...
متن کاملMassive Perturber-driven Interactions of Stars with a Massive Black Hole
We study the role of massive perturbers (MPs) in deflecting stars and binaries to almost radial (“loss-cone”) orbits, where they pass near the central massive black hole (MBH), interact with it at periapse q, and are ultimately destroyed. MPs dominate dynamical relaxation when the ratio of the 2nd moments of the MP and star mass distributions, μ2 ≡ Np 〈
متن کاملNumerical simulation of the massive scalar field evolution in the Reissner-Nordström black hole background
We studied the massive scalar wave propagation in the background of Reissner-Nordström black hole by using numerical simulations. We learned that the value Mm plays an important role in determining the properties of the relaxation of the perturbation. For Mm≪ 1 the relaxation process depends only on the field parameter and does not depend on the spacetime parameters. For Mm ≫ 1, the dependence ...
متن کاملThe Efficiency of Resonant Relaxation around a Massive Black Hole
Resonant relaxation (RR) is a rapid relaxation process that operates in the nearly-Keplerian potential near a massive black hole (MBH). RR dominates the dynamics of compact remnants that inspiral into a MBH and emit gravitational waves (extreme mass ratio inspiral events, EMRIs). RR can either increase the EMRI rate, or strongly suppress it, depending on its still poorly-determined efficiency. ...
